How to clean gutters without a ladder

Cheap gutter cleaning  without a ladder is no easy task unless you have the right tools. A specially designed gutter vacuum attachment, high pressure discharge, or rake or gutter tongs will make it possible to safely and efficiently clean debris from your gutters from ground level. You can even assemble your own DIY gutter vac out of materials you probably already have around the house!

Purchase a gutter accessory for your wet/dry vac.

Today, many manufacturers sell gutter cleaning accessories designed to fit most standard shop vacuums and leaf blowers with “reverse” features. They typically have a C-shaped construction, cheap gutter cleaning allowing you to hook them to your gutters from ground level. Simply slide the attachment onto your vacuum’s nozzle and start cleaning. []

• You can buy a basic gutter cleaning accessory for around $30. You can also find these accessories at your local hardware store or home improvement center.
• If you don’t already own a wet/dry vac, you can also get one of these at your local home improvement center. They typically cost about $100 new and about $20 a day to rent.
• Depending on the height of the gutters, it may be necessary to connect the vacuum extension to one or more extension rods to ensure it reaches.

Install your own gutter fitting with duct elbows and tape.

If a new gutter cleaning accessory isn’t in your budget, don’t worry, you can easily make your own with some  and readily available materials. First, attach your wet/dry vac or leaf blower with 1 or 2 extension wands to lengthen its reach. Then glue 2 duct elbows together end to end before gluing the widget to the vacuum nozzle. It’s as easy as that! 

• To make sure your makeshift gutter accessory stays together, use a strong type of tape, like duct tape or Gorilla tape.
• Aluminum duct elbows are about $5 each at most hardware stores, which means you can save about $20 by assembling your own fitting if you already have a suitable roll of tape.

Tip: Be sure to look for duct elbows that will fit your vacuum’s nozzle without too much extra space around the edges. A pair of 3-inch diameter elbows should fit snugly over a standard 2.5-inch vacuum nozzle.

Sweep the gutter discharge slowly from one end of the gutter to the other.

As you move the tool, the powerful stream of water it emits will break up and remove clumps of compacted organic matter that have been cemented in place by time and moisture. Flush one section of the gutter at a time until the drainage water runs clear, then continue with the next section.

• Gutter cleaners tend to do a faster and more thorough job of cleaning clogged gutters than vacuum attachments or manual removal tools.

Warning: Put on old clothes you don’t mind getting dirty before you head to work. Things are likely to get messy with all that water and loose debris flying around.
